Some call peer review a necessary evil, while others call it an unnecessary evil. And there are those who believe that, for all its flaws, the peer review process enables scholarship to move forward, one reviewed paper at a time, for the benefit of the entire field,
Whatever your personal feelings about peer review, it’s important to remember that peer review:
- ensures that published research meets high standards of quality and validity.
- helps authors cultivate dialogue among peers, and gauge responses prior to publication.
- is conducted by humans, with their strengths, weaknesses and foibles.
If you remember that peer reviewers are (usually) doing the best they can with the information they have, you will position yourself for a happy experience publishing your work.
