It’s All in the Details

Manuscript Checklist

As a safeguard, do one last inspection before you send in your final manuscript.15 Check this list to make sure

  • The name of the editor and journal title are spelled correctly in the cover letter and other correspondence
  • The required number of clean copies of the manuscript are included (if submitted by snail-mail)
  • The title page and running title follow the requested format
  • The full names, affiliations, qualifications, and contact information are included for each author
  • Author names are removed from all pages after the title page if there is a blind review process
  • The abstract adheres to the requirements for format and length
  • Keywords are included (if required)
  • The manuscript does not exceed the recommended length
  • The manuscript follows the required format for organization, layout, placement of tables and figures, appendices, and references
  • Citations and references are complete and in the correct style
  • There is an entry in the reference list for every work cited in the manuscript, and every item in the reference list is cited in the text of the paper.
  • Required attachments are included:
    • Acknowledgements, e.g., source of funding
    • Authors’ signatures and statement of contributorship (who did what)
    • Copyright form signed by all authors
    • Statement on conflicts of interest
    • Consent form(s) for use of copyrighted materials
    • Documentation of “personal communications”
    • Evidence of “in press” citations, e.g., copy of acceptance letter from the publisher
    • Suggested reviewers
  • Page or reprint fees are included (if required)

The details may be tedious, but the more you pay attention to them, the more it will pay off for you!
