Part I: The Research Process
Are We There Yet?
The Literature Search as a Non-Linear Process
Before we leave the topic of the literature search, let’s address one additional point. A thorough search of the literature requires a systematic approach, but it is not a linear process. Rather, it is an iterative one. As you examine the literature, you will find yourself following new leads from the reference lists, keywords, and authors you locate. These in turn may lead to other important tributaries branching off the main stream of your research topic. You may even find yourself reshaping the scope of your inquiry as you discover new approaches and avenues of research.2
The process might look something like this:
At some point in time, you may despair that you will ever master the field of research or be able to make sense of it. Don’t worry—this is normal, especially if you are relatively new to your field! Remember: it takes time to become fully conversant with the literature.
If you are literally drowning in information, you may need to narrow your scope or break up your topic into a number of smaller, more manageable pieces for publishing purposes.
Tips for the Future
- Regularly read key journals, websites, and other literature in your field to keep up with new developments and ideas.
- Develop a systematic way to record important findings and their sources as you go along.
- Keep a running bibliography using tools such as EndNote or other reference software.
If you follow these tips, the next time you need to do a literature search or write a literature review, it will be easier!
